Fishing report 1-22-2021
Robert Hedden from our Oregon City store enjoyed a gorgeous day on the river yesterday while fishing with Pro Guide, Chris Vertopoulos, and caught this nice broodstock Steelhead. Way to go, gentlemen! (Chris V’s Guide Service: 503-349-1377.) Winter Steelhead fishing continues to improve and rivers are currently in prime shape. Good luck!
Fishing report 1-22
Winter Steelhead fishing has improved this past week with most rivers in the Pacific Northwest dropping into shape. Anglers found success using many different techniques from Bobberdoggin, Sidedrifting and float fishing, to backtrolling plugs and drift fishing. With lots of rivers being a nice “Steelhead Green,” anglers were able to enjoy good weather and great water conditions simultaneously.
Kokanee fishing has remained good at Merwin Lake this last week. The fish that are being caught are actually a fairly good size for this time of year. Recently small spinner blades and Spin-n-Glo’s tipped with shoepeg corn have been the go-to technique. Troll them high in the water column behind one of your favorite flashers and you have a winning combo.
Trout fishing is still an option and folks that have been putting their time in are being rewarded for their efforts. Bait is always a go-to choice during these cold winter months. However, especially on sunny days, casting spinnners or kastmasters can really get finicky Trout on the bite.
Catch and release sturgeon fishing is still a viable option, however, most folks have opted to wait out the high, debris-filled water. The Willamette will continue to drop making for some good Sturgeon fishing down in the Portland Harbor. Squid, sandshrimp, herring and nightcrawlers will all be productive baits.
Crabbing is always an option in most bays and estuaries that line the Oregon Coast. This time of year, the weather can be the hardest part to deal with, but when you plan your trip around the weather you can have a very fun and productive time.
Always be sure to check local regulations at ODFW and WDFW before heading out. Find reports and two most widely used baits, information on the Fisherman's Community page.
