Fishing Report 8-19-2022
Congratulations to Karen Isley from our Delta Park store for winning the 5th Annual Lipstick Salmon Slayers Tournament with a beautiful 17.4 pound hatchery Chinook Salmon. She fished with the Tenacity Outdoors team that included captain US Army Veteran John Kaiser JR and her husband US Army veteran "Cookie Monster" Dan Isley. Fishing Report:
Astoria is really getting good as far as the Chinook fishing is concerned. The last few days the tides have softened up some and the Chinook have responded. All throughout the Astoria/Buoy 10 area our Pro Staff have been reporting great fishing. Some of them have even been running afternoon trips. Including Fisherman’s Pro, Steve Leonard, who limited out his morning clients and then was able to go out for an evening troll and get his son and mother their limit as well! Once a good push of Coho enters the river the fishing will be lights out!
In the ocean the Coho fishing has been just short of ridiculous. Many folks have reported amazing fishing from Coos Bay up to Astoria. Fisherman’s Pro, Bill Monroe Jr., has been finding limits for his clients everyday he ventures into the ocean. The catch has been predominantly Coho which gives everyone the confidence that in a week or two the Coho fishing in Astoria should be crazy good.
In the Columbia, from Longview up to Bonneville, the Chinook fishing is really just starting to pick up. Typically, these fisheries really get going once we hit the third and fourth week of August. Anchor fishing Wobblers on the outgoing tide and trolling 360 flashers on the slack and incoming tides are a couple of very effective ways to target these fish.
Bottom fishing in the ocean is also a great option at the moment. Fisherman’s Pro, Ted Teufel, has been staying close to home and fishing out of Garibaldi in his big saltwater boat, all while keeping his clients more than entertained with bottom fish, Salmon and big Lingcod.
The Crabbing has been decent and will only get better as we move closer to September and October. The water will start to cool down and the Crab will really start to fill out.
Tuna are here! We have been getting reports of Tuna being caught all up and down the coast. 30-40 miles offshore has seemed to where the magical zone has been.
For those not wanting to head to the coast, the Kokanee fishing up at Merwin and Yale has been quite good still. The fish have been deeper in the water column, but once you narrow down where they are the action has been consistent.
Trout fishing is still going on across the state. With the current warm temperatures, most folks are focusing their efforts on early mornings or late evenings when the Trout are most active. Locally, North Fork Reservoir on the Clackamas just got stocked with over 5,000 legal Trout! Which will give anglers a real crack at finding limits of Trout closer to Portland.
