Fishing Report 9-02-2022
The Steelhead Kid and sister Sha-Sha recently wrapped up their Astoria Salmon fishing with this fat Coho and nice Chinook. As the son and daughter of Fisherman’s Pro Guide, Pete Field, the Force is strong in these two!
Fishing Report:
With the lower Columbia River shutting down, from Bonneville to Buoy 10, many anglers are branching out and looking towards other fisheries. Southwest Washington has several rivers like the Lewis and Cowlitz, which have Chinook and Coho entering them daily. Also, the Columbia River from Bonneville Dam upriver is open, and there are lots of opportunities to intercept some Salmon at the mouths of the White Salmon and Klickitat to name a few.
Tributaries across Southwest Washington and Northwest Oregon are just starting to see the first few Coho entering their systems. Once we get a small shot of rain, you will really start to see Coho making their presence known. Casting spinners, spoons, and plugs are all great baits to start with when searching for fresh aggressive Coho. Bobber and eggs, drift fishing eggs, or twitching jigs are also killer techniques to try.
Bottom fishing remains a stellar option for many anglers as the ocean is stuffed full of them. Mix in a few limits of Crab and you are set to have a feast!
Tuna are here and the Sport fishing fleet has been getting after them! Trolling has been good for many fishermen and once you hook up, the vertical jigging and live bait action has been great as well!
Kokanee fishing has still been going well at Lake Merwin, Yale and Swift Reservoirs. The Kokanee have definitely put on some weight over the summer and our reports are that they are still pretty schooled up. Most anglers have reported success between 40’ and 60’ deep in the water column.
Trout fishing has been good for anglers getting up early and fishing the coolest parts of the day. ODFW has started to plant in bodies of water fairly often with Lake Harriet, Lake Trillium, and North Fork Reservoir all receiving healthy plants these last few days. Early morning trolling is always a great bet as the Trout seem to be most active during that time period. For bank anglers, casting spinners or kastmasters is a great option as well as the go-to method. Powerbait off the bottom or a nightcrawler under a bobber is also always a reliable technique.
